Although tools pertaining to the Stone Age have been discovered in Nepal, not much is known about the Neolithic peoples of Nepal. The oldest references to Nepali peoples, the Kirants, were made in the Mahabharatas. According to various sculptures in Nepal and also in the Valley, Kiratis took over Mahispalas who took over the Gopalas. Kiratis ruled Nepal some 2500 years ago. There are still Kiratis who reside in Nepal and they are of Tibeto-Burman origins speaking Tibeto-Burman Languages. Although initial Kiratis were probably animists because Buddha was born only 2000 years later, today, they are mostly Buddhists.
